  • Basel III and Banking Efficiency
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The European Association of University Teachers of Banking and Finance Annual Meeting, Aug. 29 - 1 Sept., Valetta, Malta.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The overall aim of the Basel III accord is to minimize and preferably eliminate the risk of a new global financial turmoil in the future. The new accord is particularly emphasising the importance of increasing the capitalization of banks in order to strengthening financial system stability. Basel III requires that banks set aside more ‘core’ equity capital than under the current Basel II accord. Banks are also required to gradually build-up an additional capital conservation buffer of 2.5 percentage units and, if the national regulator so decides, an equally large countercyclical buffer during periods of high credit growth. Besides this, the new accord introduces minimum liquidity requirements both on a monthly and annual basis. In this chapter we study the likely impact of the new regulation on banking operations and efficiency. What is the cost? In the prospect of increased core capital and new liquidity requirements there are already signs of larger Swedish banks reducing their trading operations and widening their interest rate spread differential. Will the new regulation mean a re-shaping of banks and that arbitraging activities move to less regulated parts of the financial industry? What can we learn from structural changes following Basel II when assessing and evaluating the impact of Basel III?

  • THE ROLE OF LOGISTICS SERVICE PROVIDERS IN ADVANCING SUPPLY CHAIN FINANCE
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: NOFOMA 2017 Conference, 7-9th of June, Lund.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper investigates from a financial, logistics and legal standpoint the possibility to deliver enhanced supply chain finance (SCF) solutions to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through logistics service providers (LSPs) who act as validators and increase visibility of supply chains.

  • Banks' Operational Risk Measurement in Practice: Swedish banks' adaptation to the Basel II accord
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Wolpertinger Conference 2009, European Association of University Teachers of Banking and Finance, Sept 2-5, Rome, Italy.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Since the implementation of Basel II in 2007, risk management in banks includes capital adequacy requirement also for operational risk. A bank‟s exposure to risk may be evaluated based on three measurement approaches with different degree of sophistication. The aim of this paper is to evaluate Swedish banks‟ adoption of regulatory risk measurement approaches over the first two years of Basel II. Particular interest is paid to the impact of the financial crisis and the proportion of capital held by the banks depending on how they measure exposure to operational risk as well as in relation to their exposure to credit and market risk. We find that most banks are using the default approaches provided by the regulatory body as it does not pay off to use a more sophisticated approach. The use of more advanced approaches depends primarily on the size of the bank, but also its ownership. Finally, there is strong relationship between the banks‟ choice of operational risk approach and their regulatory approach used for measuring exposures to credit risk.

  • Different Perspectives on Supply Chain Finance – In search of a holistic approach
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PLAN’s Research and Application Conference, 25-26 October, Gothenburg.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper discusses from a logistics services, financial and legal standpoint the possibility to deliver SCF solutions to the entire supply chain. Particularly the potential new role of LSPs as independent third parties that can assist in verification and risk assessment for trade financiers or add supply chain finance to the service portfolio. Based on a conceptual model defining supply chain finance and financial supply chain management, the research approach includes conceptual development complemented by financial and legal analysis. The findings in the areas of information asymmetry, visibility, working capital and division of roles can foster innovation in the financial technology arena for greater financial inclusion in international trade.

  • Financial crisis and EU banks’ performance
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The 13th Annual SNEE European Integration Conference, May 17-20, 2011, Mölle, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study replicates a prior study on how the profitability of Swedish banks was affected by the financial crisis on banks in EU countries that are also members of BIS. Particular emphasis is put on analyzing how the crisis affected banks' profitability with respect to their exposures to different kinds of financial risk, i.e. to credit risk, liquidity risk, interest rate risk and capital risk. Comparisons are made between banks in different regions in the EU as well as between different types of banks in order to explore whether there are differences in the financial performance and risk-taking of the banks with respect to their geographical operations area (nationality) and association form.

  • Collusion and Licensing in Oligopolies with Linear Marginal Operating Costs
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at Wolpertinger 2019 meeting in Venice Italy, August 28-31, 2019.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Oligopolistic competition is a quite common phenomenon in many industries, not least in the aviation, banking and telecom industries. In these industries, just a few firms are often dominant on the domestic markets as well as on the international arena. Not seldom, we can observe coordinated behavior between some or several of the firms in the form of, for example, alliances and/or cartels. Coordinated behavior can improve cost efficiency, prevent entry and create market power. For the firms coordinated behavior may be attractive if it increases their profit, while from the perspective of consumers collusion is of course undesirable when hampering competition. However, this is not necessarily the case. In this paper, we model and analyze coordinated behavior of competing firms in a Cournot setting. In standard models, it is assumed that firms have constant marginal operating costs and no fixed costs. We show that collusion might be beneficial from a societal standpoint when firms that operate under imperfect competition have linear marginal operating costs and fixed entry costs. Under certain conditions, coordinated firm behavior under Cournot oligopoly leads to higher industry profit and consumer welfare than uncoordinated behavior. Moreover, marginal operating costs that are sufficiently increasing in output enhance the incentives of firms to engage in technology transfer through licensing. Licensing might in some cases serve as an enforcing mechanism of coordinated behavior among innovating firms and increase the attractiveness of cartels
